Why did GiftingLife choose LifeStraw?

And why we hope you’ll choose it too.

Superior technology

Among other filters in the market, LifeStraw’s membrane ultrafiltration is one of the best.

This has been proven through numerous tests from third—party institutions including the World Health Organization (WHO).  This type of technology also yields one of the lowest carbon footprint, so aside from being for people, it is also good for the environment.

Made for the community

LifeStraw was built on a partnership that started over 20 years ago with the Carter Center in a collective effort to eradicate Guinea worm disease by removing the parasite from drinking water.  The personal LifeStraw that removes bacteria and parasites was introduced in 2005 for people in developing countries and for emergency relief situations – providing safe drinking water to people who do not have access.

This day, LifeStraw® is one of the leading solutions for communities without safe drinking water.  It was built with the community in mind, especially for low-income, marginalized, or developing areas. This perfectly goes together GiftingLife’s commitment to always give back and make sure that world-class high quality solutions are also afforded to people and communities that most need them.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.) What type of water can I use with my LifeStraw® Family 2.0?

LifeStraw® Family 2.0 can directly filter water from any source – unfiltered tap or faucet, rainwater, river, lakes, flowing creek, or deep wells, without the need for purification tablets or prior boiling.  If the input water has very high muddiness, however, please let most sediment particles settle first before pouring the clearer water into the product’s dirty water chamber.

2.) Can LifeStraw® Family 2.0 improve the taste of my water?

LifeStraw® Family 2.0 does not add anything to your water that can change its taste.  It has a removable chlorine capsule that may help reduce nasty taste and smells (Although if your water is already chlorinated at source, it may be better not to use this attachment. Refer to no.9 of this guide).  However, any strong taste caused by originally-dissolved chemicals in the water will not be affected.  Water will taste generally the same.

3) Does LifeStraw® Family 2.0 filter heavy metals like arsenic, iron and fluoride?

The technology involved in LifeStraw® is membrane ultrafiltration which has a limitation of filtering against chemicals and heavy metals.  Please do not use this device to filter water that is known to be contaminated with toxic chemicals and/or heavy metals such as arsenic, iron, fluoride or lead.

4) Does LifeStraw® Family 2.0 filter also filter out beneficial minerals?

No, beneficial minerals are not filtered-out and are still retained in the water you drink.

5) What effect does LifeStraw® Family 2.0 have on seawater or salty water? Can it make seawater drinkable?

Chemical compounds that make seawater salty cannot be filtered out by LifeStraw® Family 2.0.  This product does not take away salt from water, however, it still removes the bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants.

6) What must I do if the filter of my LifeStraw® Family 2.0 unit seems clogged?

At regular intervals, it is required to do maintenance and ‘backwashing’ which can be done following the instructions in the attached manual.  This will clean the filters of whatever sand, silt and debris that might have got deposited.

7) Why does the water from my LifeStraw® Family 2.0 have a strong chlorine taste or smell?

This can happen when the unfiltered water itself is highly chlorinated (as in the case of some urban or municipal water systems).  If you experience this, first try removing the chlorine chamber from the first (or top) compartment (refer to manual).  If the input/unfiltered water is already pre-chlorinated, you may skip using the chlorine chamber.  If this does not resolve the issue, attach any activated carbon filter to your faucet to reduce the chlorination of your input water.  If the issue persists, contact the product customer service care provider or distributor.  Details are at the bottom of this guide or document.

8) What is the shelf life of LifeStraw® Family 2.0?

With proper care and storage, the product itself can actually last for very long.  The filter, however, has a maximum filtration capacity of 30,000 L.  The filter inside is replaceable, and only legitimate replacement filters from authorized distributors must be used to maintain the quality and effectiveness of the product.

9) How do I know if the 30,000L filter capacity is completely used up?

You will be able to observe that despite constant maintenance and backwashing, water will eventually stop or will have a difficulty to flow from the filter to the clean water tank.  This signals that the filter is already used up and must be replaced.
